• One of two hauliers running Detroit Diesel's Series 60 engine in a Foden tractive unit is turning in 36.7 litres/100km (7.7mpg), 130,000km into the trial, Alfred Hymas of Ripon, North Yorkshire has been running an H-reg 4x2 Foden fitted with the 272kW (365hp) 12.7-litre version of the engine on trial since last September.
When CM ran exclusive driving impressions of the truck in January (CM 17-23 Jan), Hymas was reporting a 43.46 litres/100km (6.5mpg) fuel consumption, although Detroit said at the time that a truck would have to run 120,000150,000km for the engine to hit optimum performance.
Current oil change intervals are 32,000km (20,000 miles), but Hymas managing director Maurice Hymas is keen to in crease these to 48,000km (30,000 miles).
Tipper operator Hymas says he is impressed with the engine, which replaced a Caterpillar fitted to the original truck, and would be keen to order another if Foden or another truck manu facturer decided to use it.
The other Series 60 currently on road trials in the UK is with Railfreight. Detroit has still not convinced any UK truck makers to take the American-built engine, although Foden is being tipped as favourite to be first.
