• Plans to replace the Iveco Ford 300-25 Maggie have been shelved because of the collapse in tipper sales. The 300-25 was phased out earlier this year because its naturally aspirated Deutz air-cooled engine could not meet forthcoming emissions regulations. Expectations were that a revised fuel injection system would give the naturally aspirated 13.38-litre engine a new lease of life.
A similar Deutz 12.7-litre turbocharged engine powers the 300-32 and 300-34 Maggies. Iveco Ford's decision means it will not be represented in the lower-powered eight-legger market until a new range of vehicles is introduced in the mid90s. The company believes the higher-powered, low-stressed engine in the 300-32 and 300-34 need not mean heavy fuel consumption, In the meantime, JET is confident that the Deutz aircooled turbo-diesel can meet emissions regulations without further modification.
The Euro Cargo, launched in Europe earlier this year, is the first integrated Iveco product since the company was formed in the mid-70s. It will be the first of a new range of Iveco trucks designed to take the company through to the next century, Future multi-wheelers will have Iveco developed cabs and engines, although this does not rule out air-cooled engines on the options list. Iveco's joint venture with Nissan Diesel will yield a new generation of heavy truck engines in the 164-239kW
(220-320hp) bracket (CM 14-20 March) from the mid-90s. These will have potential for any Iveco multi-wheelers introduced at that time.
Almost 70% of eight-leggers sold last year had more than 205kW (275hp), Volvo dominated the market with the FL10 and lower powered (180kW (245hp)) FL7, taking a 24% market share. The decline in tip
per sales is continuing the disastrous trend of the past two years. Eight-legger sales in 1990 were down 51% on 1989, And 1991 sales so far are down 51% on last year with no indication that the market will pick up while the construction industry remains stagnant. If the current trends continue, eightlegger sales will be below 600 units this year.
