Royal opening

THE QUEEN officially opened the £64m South East Arm extension of King George Dock, Hull, on August 4. The arm, which is now to be called Queen Elizabeth Dock, provides an additional 5,307ft of quay length. The 2,140ft South Quay will be used as a container terminal and has been equipped with 50ft gauge rails in readiness for a 40-ton capacity container transporter crane which will be in operation in mid-1970. The crane will have an outreach of 78-ift and a backreach of 70ft and will complete a cycle of operation in three minutes. Some 41 acres of hard-standing have been provided for container and unit load parking and assembly.

Another for Australia

COMMENCING her maiden voyage from Rotterdam this week was the Australian National Line's cellular containership Australian Endeavour. The ship, 714ft in length with a capacity of 1,223 standard 20ft ISO containers, is similar to Associated Container Transportation's ACT 1 and ACT 2 which it will be joining in service on the Europe/Australia service.

The line has another similar vessel on order which, together with two more for ACT and one for OCL, will comprise the four-vessel fleet scheduled to start the Australia /New Zealand /East Coast of North America container service early in 1971.
