Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

of the ve icle must I provide additional rear lighting during the hours of darkness?

AIt depends on the length of the overhang whether you need to provide additional rear lighting.

Section 76 (2) of the Road Traffic Act 1 972 provides for a further rear lamp to be carried so that no part of the load projects to the rear more than 3ft 6in behind that lamp, when the load projects more than 3ft 6in beyond the rear lamp fitted to the vehicle.

If the vehicle is carrying a fire escape, or is a land or agricultural tractor carrying an agricultural implement, whether a vehicle or not, the distance between the rear lamp and the end of the overhang is extended to 6ft by Regulation 36 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1971.
