IF TRANSPORT costs have to be increased, the responsibility "rests fairly and squarely with the Chancellor and his advisors".
An embittered Road Haulage Association national chairman, Jack Male, went on to tell a Bristol audience: "What the Chancellor says usually bears no relation to what he does."
Mr Male supported his view by recalling that the Government had predicted disastrous effects resulting from the increase in Arab oil prices.
"It seems the same does not apply when the Chancellor increases the cost of fuel."
Mr Male warned that the oil exporting countries might well consider that they could continue to raise their prices as long as Britain's hauliers continue to accept domestic increases by way of tax, without complaint.
He accused the Chancellor of misleading Parliament and the nation over the excise licence increase.
