OFFENCES committed b Charles Mervyn Carr, tradin as Carr's Furniture Removals 21 Marshall Terrace, Gilesgat Moor, County Durham, wer the result of "sheer stupidity,' it was said by Northern Licensing Authority, B. J. Foster, at Darlington.
Mr Carr was seeking a ne licence for one vehicle afte neglecting to apply for renewal of an existing 0 licence, which expired in May, 1974.
He admitted a conviction for unauthorised use of his furniture van, in December, 1976, for which he was still paying off the fine by weekly instalments.
A second prosecution for unauthorised use was pending, and also one for failing to keep proper records.
After the LA had commented that despite the December conviction it appeared that the applicant had continued to ignore the law, Mr Carr said that he had been having domestic trouble. His mother had been very ill and things 'had got on top of him.
The LA said he was in two minds whether to make a grant at all and had seriously considered whether Mr Carr could be regarded as a fit and proper person to hold a licence.
As he had a family to keep and work available he would take a chance, and a licence was granted for 12 months. During this period he would be on probation.
