A NEW six-wheeler from Mercedes-Benz aimed at the tipper market will make its first appearance at the Road Haulage Association Tipper Conference in Harrogate next week.
Known as the 2419, it is the first Mercedes fitted with the 0M401 V6 engine to go on sale in Britain.
Three wheelbase options will be available including a 4.8m (15ft 10in) model which is intended for haulage operation.
The choice of wheelbase also dictates the transmission specification. The tipper chassis with the 3.6 and 4.2m (lift 10in and 13ft 9in) wheelbases both have the ZF six-speed synchromesh gearbox, while the longer haulage model is fitted with the eight-speed range-change Mercedes box, as used in the 1617 16-tonner.
As usual with Mercedes, the engine is naturally aspirated, producing 134kW (183bhp) at 2,500rpm from a capacity of 9.57 litres (584cuin) while the maximum torque of 581Nm (429Ibft) comes in at 1,450rpm.
In contrast to the LP2419 — the model the New Generation truck replaces — the braking system is full-air operated with spring brakes for parking.
The move to full-air has simplified the provision of trailer brake connections allowing the 2419 to be engineered, to special order, for drawbar operation at up to 30 tons gtw.
The new Mercedes-Benz will appear at Harrogate, in sub form, fitted with a Neville Industries Vetralite all-welded aluminium tipper body.
Prices for the new truck vary from £16,275 for the short wheelbase to £16,575 and £17,050 for the longer models.
A full technical appraisal of the 2419 complete with driving impressions will appear in next week's CM.
