MARCH SLUMP IN IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.

The Board of Trade returns for March, 1938, show that the value of commercial vehicles, cars, chassis and accessories imported during that month was £479,834, contrasted with £538,951 in the comparable month of 1937.

The number of commercial vehicles exported was 300 and, although this total is 61 below that for March, 1937, the value at £113,180 was only £3,467 lower. An interesting point is that. in the three months ended March, the number of commercial vehicles exported, at 855, was 593 fewer than for the opening three months of 1937, but their value was appreciably higher, the total of £384,389 contrasting with £351,034.

In the case of commercial chassis. a fall was also to be noted, and the 972 shipped had a value of £197,149, the corresponding returns for 1937 being 1,413 and £208,290 respectively. In this case, too, although the number of chassis sent overseas (2,875 against 3,887) was lower in the three months ended March, their value was higher (£642.452 against £609,090).
