Ago being a service of quite recent date. Yet 30 years ago a de luxe motorbus service for first-class passengers was being run between Portland Place and Queen's Gate, London, W., the fare being 6d. The vehicles were described as Pullmans of the road, and an announcement at the time stated that every driver and conductor wore livery. We wonder if they had the breakdowns we experienced on buses.

When the lesson was over the instructor said that as he wanted to get back to his depot quickly and safely he would take over the wheel. The result was a crash, and the learner is now considering taking the instructor out for a few lessons.

Comparative Fuel ConA N interesting comparativesumptions of a Lorry 1-1. performance test of fuel and Car consumption was carried out recently with a Guy 54-ton lorry and a 12 h.p. saloon car. At the commencement both vehicles were weighed, the laden lorry scaling 84 tons, and the car, with ballast, 25 cwt. They were then run over the same course, covering normal main roads, at the same speed, and for a
distance of 42 miles. The result showed that the lorry averaged 13.4 m.p.g., and the car 29.8 m.p.g., but in terms of actual load carried the lorry proved to be nearly three times as efficient as the car, the ton-mileage per gallon working out at 113.9 and 44.7 respectively.

We have been experimenting with such a bulb named the Rode, which has two shielded filaments, and have found that, when it is properly focused and the lamp correctly set, a substantially flat-topped beam is projected, affording a satisfactory driving light which appears to cause little inconvenience, through glare, to drivers of approaching vehicles.
