• Trucks are not to blame for Britain's congested roads, say experts from Oxford University's transport study unit.
Car traffic has grown twice as fast as lorry traffic in the past 10 years, and increased tonnage on the road has been taken up by the use of larger vehicles, they say.
A Confederation of British Industry report last week also backed the view that a higher weight limit would reduce the truck parc.
However, any move to larger trucks would have to be done gradually, according to the CBI's transport policy committee.
