• Railfreight is looking for hauliers to take a stake in a new privately run combined transport operation to rival Novatrans and Kombiverkehr in France and Germany.
It is planned that most of Combined Transport (CTL) will eventually be owned by road transport firms, with Railfreight holding the remainder of shares. The Road Haulage Association is backing the plan.
For the past few months the operation has been running on a trial basis between Harwich and Liverpool, and it is to be extended to Manchester and Birmingham.
CTL is run by Brian Lewy, who works for Railfreight, but he hopes to move head offices and give the operation its own identity. The venture will use Railfreight intermodal hubs and track and wagons leased from British Rail, but it will be operated by the private sector just as road-rail operations are on the Continent.
