Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

breakdown assistance: it now pledges to get to the scene of a tyre-related European breakdown in less than two hours—or it will reimburse the €70 roadside callout charge. This applies even if the repair technician arrives just one minute late," says UK manager Phil Bak:lack.

The network handles nearly 20,000 tyre-related CV breakdowns across Europe every year. It claims the biggest network in the business with 3,200 tyre-repair specialists in 20 countries.

In 2005 the average vehicle off-road time with Michelin Euro Assist was two hours and six minutes.

A welcome development for operators travelling on the Continent is greater price transparency, making it easier to compare services. Bridgestone, Continental and Michelin all publish detailed prices on their websites, so there should be fewer surprise charges.

European callout rates have now settled mainly into two bands, one covering Western and the other Eastern Europe. Charges also vary according to the time of day expect to pay more during the evenings or on weekends. European callouts generally attract an administration fee of €50-70.

One development that helps keep breakdown costs down and get drivers on their way more quickly are stop-and-go services for incidents where the truck can safely be driven to the nearest tyre service centre. This involves a fit ng fee on top of the cost of the tyre —ContiNetwork, for example, charges €30 per tyre.

Preventing tyre problems: Michelin's top tips • Make regular visual tyre checks.

• Check tyre pressures regularly, always when the tyre is cold, and more often if the vehicle operates in a harsh environment.

• Fit valve extensions to monitor and maintain tyre pressures on twin-wheel assemblies.

• Fit valve caps with rubber seals.

• Remember to replace valve caps after checking tyre pressures.

• Regularly monitor tread deaths to help spot problems

like incorrect pressures and misalignment.

• Remove stones and other foreign objects from the tread to prevent damage.
