Roger and Myra Alma met driver Ricky Jones at one of the hearings for his case and wrote to the court asking the judge to let him keep his freedom.

Following the case Roger Alma told Commercial Motor: "We saw him at one of the hearings and he looked very embarrassed so I went up and introduced myself to him to explain that we didn't bear him any ill-will.

"He was very honest about the accident and just admitted it was his fault," Alma added. "He just seemed like a good chap."

The Almas followed the lengthy case through hearings in Abergavenny, Cardiff and Newport. Last week Jones, from Abergavenny was given a nine-month prison sen tence, suspended for two years, with a three-year driving ban.
