• The Government's road building programme could be in danger following this week's demand by the Treasury Chief Secretary, William Waldegrave, for a £1 billion cut from the budget over the next three years.
A treasury spokesperson says no figures would be finalised until November's budget but the cuts would be "across the board".
The cuts, which could account for over 5% of the Governments Xl9b road building pro gramme, could leave a number of planned schemes facing turmoil.
The Freight Transport Association criticised the move and called for an increase in road investment.
FTA spokesman, Don McIntyre, says: We take it extremely seriously.'
He adds: "The Government put a high emphasis on competitiveness in industry. The need for the right kind of infrastructure to support it isessential.
