• Volvo has stepped up its attack on the high-power truck market with an uprated version of its F16 flagship tractive unit. It is expected to make its UK debut at the Scottish Motor Show in November and should be on sale early next year.
The latest 357kW (485hp) F16 is powered by the TD162FL variant of Volvo's 16-litre straight six chargecooled engine which supercedes the current 342kW (459hp) TD162F block. The TD162FL engine features a different fuel injection pump and an engine speed regulator. The economy band has also moved up to 1,100-1.700rpm, with maximum engine speed remaining unchanged at 1,86Orpm.
Although Volvo claims its new F16 has "Europe's most powerful truck engine" the boast is based on the torque output of the TD162FL, which pushes out a massive 2,160Nm (1,593Ib ft) — some 7% more than the old TD162F. In terms of straight horsepower the Mercedes 1748 still has more go, with 362kW (492hp) to the same ISO standard.
Volvo has developed an uprated version of the SR2000 14-speed synchromesh box, with a direct top gear for the F16. The previous RAE V90 single reduction back axle has been replaced by the RAEV91 with stronger drive shafts.
The new F16 will have ABS as standard and will be offered in the same configuration as its predecessor; either a 4 x2, 6x2 tag axle, or 6x 4 tractor.
