Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The future for Steyr Trucks in Britain looks grim following the news that the German manufacturer MAN has acquired an 80% share of the Austrian truck builder (see page 22).

So far, there are conflicting statements on what will happen to Steyr's wholly-owned UK importer — Steyr Trucks (UK), based at Milton Keynes and headed by former Scania marketing director Cliff Groves — which has been operating for little more than a year.

It now looks as if Steyr Trucks (UK) will be wound down, with Steyr Daimler Puch coming to an agreement with existing UK dealers. Any arrangement, however, would not involve the buying-back of dealer stock as it is owned by Steyr Trucks (UK). The fate of the staff at Steyr Trucks UK's head office is also in the balance.

According to Michael Ilanson, chairman of Steyr's UK dealer association formed two months ago, there has been no word on the future of the dealer network.

Alex Bunton, sales director at Steyr dealer Blucars (Bugbrooke) near Northampton, hopes that MAN will want to retain a number of Steyr dealers to give it an instant foothold in UK dealerships. MAN trucks are currently distributed in the UK by Lonrho.

Steyr Trucks (UK) sales manager Bill Johnson says: "We're in a vacuum, there's been no comment at all from Austria."
