HEAVY lorries contributed towards the bearing failure that shut London's Hammersmith Bridge in February last year, says the Greater London Council.
An engineering report prepared for the GLC said tilting foundations on the south side of the bridge were the prime cause, but one or more heavy lorries led to the roller bearings coming off their scatings, causing a noise like a loud explosion.
A 12-tonne weight limit on the bridge is now expected to be replaced by a three-tonne limit.
