GREATER Manchestt Transport's director of open tions Jack Thompson is ri tiring after 46 years in pub] transport.
Thompson started hi career in transport as a stt dent-apprentice fitter wit Sunderland Corporatio Transport Department i 1939. After two years in th Royal Naval Volunteer Re serve he became assistant en gineer with Northern Genera Transport Company an from there joined Mancheste
Corporation Transport ii 1949, rising to chief engineer
deputy manager and chief en gineer, and later general man ager.
On the formation of Seine, PTE (GMT's predecessor) it 1969, Thompson was appoin ted associate director and gen. eral manager, Centra Divisions, taking up the rob
of controller of integrate( operations in December 1971.
In 1976 he was appointed te the executive as director ol integrated operations and in 1980 director of operations.
