I never cease to marvel at Bill's extra-mural activities. When he was nudging 60 he terraced a long garden with a gradient of 1 in 4 and a base of solid chalk. This involved trundling 70 tons of rubble in a wheelbarrow and building a retaining wall 8ft high and 60ft long. Murals don't 'come much more extra than that. He has even turned his hand to dressmaking. When the crinoline wedding dress of his daughter, Anne, defied all attempts to make it stand out, mother, who was making it, consulted father. He sucked his pipe for a while and then said. "Motorcycle clutch cable — that's what you want" It was, too. Norman Hartnell would have been proud of that dress.
Bill still has the cutting of the piece I wrote about it 20 years ago. It was headed "The bride wore clutch cable."
For the next few months he will be heavily engaged with scenery and lighting at the Miller Centre Theatre in Caterham, of which he is a keen supporter. The Workmate bench that was one of his retirement gifts will certainly not be wasted.
