Soon after Bill Cotton left Commercial Motor in 1 954 he was drilling for oil off the coast of Borneo. Nothing if not versatile, he later supervised the refit of a ship while the chief engineer kept an appointment in a dis
tillery. As the chief had to be carried aboard for the sea trials, Bill was obliged to sail as fourth engineer. A pilot launch delivered him back to the end of Southend pier.
He joined Unilever on the transport side in 1956. His remit soon extended from engineering to storage and distribution, and during the past 23 years he has visited practically every civilised country in the world, and some less civilised, advising Unilever subsidiaries on every aspect of road transport.
Some two years ago he was seconded to Ul Management Consultants, a Unilever associated company, which includes technical services.
I doubt whether in the whole of his career Bill has ever made an enemy. He is completely unflappable and unfailing in courtesy and consideration for everyone.
