A MULTI-PURPOSE underbody washer/degreasing installation recently commissioned by the City of Bremen transport undertaking is believed to be unique in its wide range of acceptance covering 17.5m artic buses, standard length two-axle buses and trams, and trays of dismantled components.
Bremen was faced with staff calls for improved working conditions — fewer "dirty jobs" such as manual underfloor cleaning of vehicles, and greater consistency of cleaning standards. In view of this the undertaking designed and built a special 18m line to rationalise the cleaning process and to save running costs. The system comprises 100 spray lets disposed under the track grid over a length of almost 15m.
The entire jet rack is arranged to oscillate on its mounting over a length of approximately 2m to reach all parts of the chassis. For more economical operation the spray feed can be sectioned to be confined to the actual length of vehicle on the treatment Line.
The cleaning cycle is fully automatic and comprises three programmes, for trams and buses up to 17.5m long, for buses up to 10.5m long and for wire trays of parts and components which are moved to a tunnel section by a chain conveyor. The divided tunnel sides/roof are swung out of the way when dealing with vehicles. The system was supplied by Wache GmbH of Norderstecit, and includes a complete water treatment plant and environmental protection features.
In addition to a large fleet of trams Bremen has over 320 buses (175 of which are articulated models) and the new wash line has reduced the time taken for a pre-inspection underhody wash from two hours (manual) to less than 30 minutes. This includes vehicle preparation and draining/drying time. .
