BUS FARES in the Grampian Region are set to rise again this year because of substantially increased fuel costs. The council's transportation and roads committee last week privately considered a new fares structure for Aberdeen which will be discussed by the full council on October 4.

Meanwhile a provisional application for the increase has been made to the Traffic Commissioners. The committee also decided not to object to the new fares increase proposed by the Scottish Bus Group which has also gone to the Traffic Commissioners.

Cover costs

Director of transportation John Westaby told the committee that the SBG was in the same position as the regional council. If the region objected to the SBG fares increase, he said, then the regional council would have to cover the financial deficit incurred.

A report by Mr Westaby and director of finance Tom Carter warned of a total projected deficit of £1,058,608 by the end of the current financial year, and £1,971,108 by the end of 1980-81.

The proposed increases would raise, if approved, an estimated £1,065,000 in a full year and, if introduced soon, would raise enough to leave a deficit on the transport undertaking of between £400,000 and £500,000 at the end of the current financial year.
