as the largest exporter of commercial road vehicles in the world. This was revealed by Mr. L. G. T. Farmer, presi7 dent of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and executive vicechairman of the Rover Company, addressing a Press conference in London last week.

"Though we occupied this position, taking 1961 as a whole, we dropped to second place in the last half of that year," said Mr. Farmer. "In view of the difficult times through which we have recently been passing, it is particularly satisfying that we should have so quickly recovered top place."

Although there has been a drop in exports of commercial vehicles of approximately 15%, Britain still outpaces all her rivals and exports numbered 93,000 to the end of July. In Europe, Britain's volume of trade in commercial vehicles with the countries of E.F.T.A. has risen by 70% in the 10 years from 1951 to 1961, and currently represents about 21% of exports.
