Ineffective Rear Lights —Minister's Warning

PERATORS of commercial vehicles were warned on Sunday to ensure that the rear lights of their vehicles were working. Mr. Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport, gave the warning when speaking before presenting the awards at the Lorry Driver of the Year national finals in Coventry (see page 110).

A series of spot checks, he said, had revealed that a quarter, of the vehicles examined had rear lights that were too dim or too dirty to be effective, or else one or more of the rear lights was not working.

"A few minutes spent examining and cleaning them before leaving a pull-in ' is a simple remedy," he said.

The Minister also uttered a warning about black smoke. He said he would persevere in his efforts to get a suitable measuring device. Exhausts discharging above the cab were useless, he added, because the fumes were heavier than air.
