DRIVERS of commercial vehicles were praised for their courtesy by Lord Provost George Stephen, Aberdeen, when he handed over pri2es to winning drivers in the Aberdeen area eliminating contest in the Scottish Commercial Vehicle Driver of the Year Competition at Aberdeen last Saturday.
The entry was very small. Only 17 drivers undertook the three prescribed rnanceuvring tests at the Army camp at Great Southern Road. Eighteen drivers set off from the camp to drive over an observed course of 10 mileS, which look them via Cults and Kingswells to the starting point. A driver. whose vehicle developed mechanical trouble had to 'drop out of the contest.
The overall performance by the contestants was good and Mr. R. D. Barrack, who, along with Mr. J. B. G, Campbell, was a 'judge, said that some of the drivers were splendid. That was praise indeed, for both Mr. Barrack and Mr. Campbell are experienced car rally drivers and have competed in the Monte Carlo Rally.
Highest marks went to J. G. Boyne, ru,s1
of Aberdeen, an employee of Scottish Oils and Shell Mex, Ltd., in an Austin. He had 458 points out of a possible 500 in Class C.
Another notable performance was by J. J. Milne, of Aberdeen, a driver with the same Company, who, driving a Scainmell articulated outfit. scored 350 marks.
The first test the .drivers had to perform was to reverse at tight angles into a bay, in which there was a 15-in. clearance. The next was to drive through an opening hetweenlwo.barrels in which there was again a 15-in, clearance and then through a gate of the same width. They had to stop with the front wheels beyond a line and the rear Wheels of the vehicle not beyond another line.
Most of the drivers performed these two tests well, but it was the third that proved a tougher proposition. It was to park at the kerb in a space 14 times the length of the vehicle. Only two of the drivers got full marks in this exercise.
Competitors were examined on the
Highway Code by Chief Inspector A. J. Smith, of the Aberdeen City Police traffic department.
