Refinery Opened

SIX THOUSAND guests and employees of the Esso Petroleum Co., Ltd., last Friday saw Mr. Attlee unveil a commemorative silver plaque to mark the opening of the Fawley refinery. They were afterwards entertained to luncheon.

During the afternoon, about 50 coaches took visitors on tours of the plant and met special trains at Fawley and Brockenhurst.

Mr. L. Sinclair, chairman of the Esso concern, said that over 1 im. gallons of petrol a day would be produced and that special facilities had been provided for the refining Of oil fuel for commercial vehicles, Mr. Frank Abrams, chairman of Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey), the parent organization, which has subscribed a great deal of capital for the venture, said "it was faith in the future of Britain and in the integrity of het people that brought about this investment at Fawley."

Mr. Attlee announced that other producers had guaranteed Britain supplies of oil until the end of the year to make good those lost in Persia. He thought that the outlook for next year was brighter and he warned Persia that a long delay in reaching a settlement on the oil question might cause her to lose her markets.
