• Union chief Victor McGeer, who speaks for 30,000 truck drivers at many of Britain's transport companies, is stepping down.
Rumours on the reasons for his departure—centring on disagreements over pay policy with colleagues—were this week denied by McGeer's boss John Moore, national secretary for the road transport commercial trade group at the TGWU.
Union sources say McGeer, whose £30,000 job as national officer is being advertised, was more willing than fellow negotiators to recommend accepting pay offers from hauliers.
