• Strathaven tipper operator Yuill & Dodds has lost its appeal against a one-week suspension of its licence for 101 vehicles and 72 trailers. However, the ban does not affect its fleet of 10 specialised reefers.
Scottish Traffic Commissioner Michael Betts suspended the licence after Yuill & Dodds was convicted of permitting drivers hours and tachograph offences (CM 18-24 March). But the suspension was delayed until the company's appeal could be heard by the Transport Tribunal this week.
The Tribunal was told that closing down the business for a week would cost the company £30,000 and the possible loss of contracts. Nonetheless it directed that the suspension take effect from 1 November.
The Tribunal said it was clear that the IC intended to deter tipper operators from accepting contracts that could not be met legally.
elations between drivers and bosses at an Essex dairy have soured following the firm's plan for shifts which drivers fear could cost them up to 270 a week. Lord Rayleigh's Dairies says the shifts will benefit its 61 drivers at Hatfield Peverel because they will work five instead of six or seven days a week.
But the artic and rigid drivers fear they will lose the chance to take on extra work if they complete their daily run early. The drivers currently earn a basic weekly minimum of 2270 before tax.
