by Alan Bunting • Volvo is to dual-source electronic unit injectors for its new overhead camshaft D12 engine, in order to ensure continuous supply.
They will be produced in Grand Rapids, Michigan by Detroit Diesel's components division Diesel Technology Corporation, as well as at Lucas's new plant in Stroud, Gloucestershire.
Volvo's back-up supply contract for EUI injectors has been placed not directly with the American corporation but with Bosch, which took a 49% holding in DTC following the 1991 joint development agreement between DD and Mercedes-Benz. Bosch's own truck engine unit injector designs have been abandoned in favour of the well-proven DTC components first introduced on Detroit's Series 60 engine range in 1985.
Volvo D12 engines destined for installations in US-market Volvo-GM chassis are expected to be fitted with DTC injectors in the interests of aftermarket availability.
Lucas and DTC electronic injectors operate on an identical principle, making use of a single plunger to regulate fuel metering and timing.
This is in contrast to the rival Cummins Celect injector which employs separate inter-acting plungers to perform the two control functions.
