• Four ports have joined Russell Davies and P&O in the bid for British Rail-owned rail container company Freightliner, which is up for sale as part of BR's privatisation programme.
Interconnect Rail, a joint venture company set up by the ports of Thamesport, Tilbury, Southampton and Liverpool, says it wishes to increase the proportion of container traffic carried by rail. It is also interested in running its own trains.
Between them the four ports claim to handle about 67% of the 430,000 deep-sea containers carried by Freightliner.
