CUMBERLAND road hauliers were ‘4.-• commended last week for their initiative and competence by Mr. B. A. Johnson, administrative manager of Thames Board Mills Ltd., at Keswick.
The company's new factory at Siddick, near Workington, is expected to be in full production within a year or two with employment for up to 600 and drawing much of its wood for pulping from Lakeland plantations of the Forestry Commission.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were guests of honour at the 11th annual dinner of the West Cumberland sub-area of the Road Haulage Association.
The area chairman, Mr. Harry Fickthall, of Cleator Moor, assured Mr. Johnson and colleagues that his members were fully alive to the opportunities arising during the building of the factory and its subsequent activities, and capable of fulfilling any commission requiring the use of standard or specialized vehicles.
Of the general outlook for the haulage industry, Mr. Pickthall was confident that the answer to Mrs. Barbara Castle's veiled threat of nationalization—made recently when she spoke of "seeking other methods" if she could not get what was wanted—was studied attention by all members to hours and maintenance. Thus they could build up a strong case against nationalization.
