A LTHOUGH the linking of three of his .t—t North Wales destinations involved deviations from authorized routes, it was essential if he was to give the public the service they had enjoyed in the past, Mr. J. Dodd, managing director of North Manchester Coaches, Ltd., Rochdale Road, Manchester 9, told the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Manchester last Friday. He wanted to link Rhyl, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay for period return traffic, operating from Whitsuntide to September each year. The Commissioners' decision was reserved.
The case had been stated last April when a series of such applications arose as a result of the Commissioners' proposals to prohibit the linking of destinations and catchment areas. Operational schedules were submitted and Mr. Dodd said that the company had been linking these destinations for many years; they were allowed 84 vehicle journeys in respect of them. He had never linked for linking's sake but only when occasion demanded.
With period return traffic, he went on, it was easy for the number of passengers on the return journey to fluctuate and agents often made mistakes. about the number to be conveyed on a particular service. Hence one often had to link when least expected. Mr. G. H. P. Beames, objecting on behalf of British Railways, pointed out that the routeing of the licences in question did not allow linking, and there must have been a great deal of deviation. The case was also opposed by North Western Road Car Co., Ltd.
