ACARLISLE company, R. Liddle, Ltd., were granted eight additional tippers without objection by the Northern Licensing Authority at Carlisle on Monday.

Mr. J. Lightfoot, for the applicant, told the Authority, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, that the company had 24 tippers on B licences, conditioned for the carriage of plant and materials for building and engineering within 35 or 60 miles,

A large amount of work was done for Cumberland County Council, Mitchell Construction Co., Ltd., the Central Electricity Generating Board, Limmer and. Trinidad Lake Asphahe Co., Ltd., who (with others) • were supporting the application. No objections had been received.

Mr. Hanlon said that on the evidence he was satisfied there was a need for additional tippers.

SMALLER DEFICIT FOR NEWPORT

THE year ended March 31, last, was the most difficult, operationally, in recent years for Newport Transport Department, the general manager, Mr. R. A. Hawkins, has reported. The Undertaking had a rict deficit of £8,634, compared with one of £36,732 the previous year. . The accumulated deficit is now £25,490.

Total income per mile last year was 39.1d. per mile, as against 35.8d. the previous year. But wbrking expenses rose from 36,4d. per mile to 37.5d. last year. The undertaking carried approximately 38,328,744 passengers, compared with an estimated 42,345,265 in 1958-59.
