PRODUCTION advanced from 3,175 commercial vehicles a week in July to 3,996 a week in the four-week period of August. Output for August totalled 15,984 units (slightly below the monthly average for the year), of which 7,849 were for export and 8,135 for the home market.
The month's production was made up as follows:—Under 15-cwt. capacity. 7,122; 15 cwt. to 6 tons, 7,321; over 6 tons, 457; motorbuses and trolleybuses, 985; and battery-electrics (excluding prams), 99.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 133,892 commercial vehicles were made in the first eight months of the year, an average of 16,737 a month. Production for the whole of this year is likely to exceed 200,000, a substantial increase on last year's excellent figure.
Of the output during the months January to August, 62,636 vehicles were for export and 71,256 were for the home market. Production by classes was as follows:—Under 15 cwt., 57,579; 15 cwt. to 6 tons, 61.202; over 6 tons, 4,590; motorbuses and trolleybuses, 9,117; and battery-electrics (excluding prams), 1,404.
Figures just issued show that 293 works trucks were built in July, 117 being for export and 176 for home service. In the first seven months of the year, 2.607 works trucks were made, of which 847 were for export and 1,760 for the home market. Fork-lift trucks represented about a quarter of the total on HIGHER FARES FROM SUNDAY WHEN the new fares on Manchester VY Corporation motorbus services come into operation on Sunday, trolley-bus fares will be raised propor tionately. Sanction for the increase has now been received from the Ministry of Transport. It gives Manchester a 10. minimum fare, with children's tickets at half the adult rate (1d. minimum).
