INSPECTOR W. H. C. 13Roortatt, a bus inspector of the-Great Western Railway Co., has retired after 42 years' service. After holding several appointments A22 with the company, he was, in 1905, promoted bus inspector, and, from that time until 1930, he did considerable travelling over the G.W.R. railway system in connection with his businspector duties, MR. ALEX. L. M'CoLL, chairman of the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., has been appointed chairman of the Lubricating Oil Pool Board, which now controls the whole importation and distribution of lubricating oils throughout the country.
From 1915-19 he was a. member of the Ministry of Munitions Committee controlling the lubricating-oil industry of the country.
MR. P. R. BLAKE, A.M.I.E.E., M.Inst.T., who, for a number of years, has been general manager of the South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., has joined the Board of the company and been appointed managing director. In addition to its own bus undertaking in the South Wales area, which was initiated in May, 1914, the company owns and operates the undertaking of the Swansea Improvements and Tramways Co., which, during Mr. Blake's general managership, was completely converted from tram to bus operation, the change-over being effected in 1937.
MR. H. J. PEARCE, who retired on October 13 after completing -56 years' service with the Brush Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd., recently received a presentation at the hands of Mr. T. B. Keep, managing director, on behalf of the employees; a picture on this page shows the ceremony taking place. Mr. Pearce served 38 years as chief of the stores department.
MR. R. F. NEWMAN, whose portrait appears on this page, has been appointed general manager of the Basingstoke works of John I. Thorny. croft and Co., Ltd. He has been in the service of the company for a number of years, both in branches abroad .as well as at home, and for the past few years has been assistant general manager at Basingstoke.
MR. H. BROUGHTON, chief adminis• trative assistant, has been appointed general manager by Burnley. Coins and Nelson Joint Transport Committes in succession to MR. C. H. STAFFORD now of Leicester. The short list foi the Burnley post was published lasl week. Mr. Broughton, who joined tin staff of Burnley Tramways 35 years ago, assisted with the change-over t c buses and undertook important duties in connection with the merger of Uri three municipal systems.
