Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Six cyclists have been killed on London's roads in the past fortnight, four of whom were killed by LGVs. This takes the total number of fatalities on the capital's streets to 14 this year. Something needs to be done. But that something in question doesn't have to be done exclusively by the haulage industry. Yes, we need to play our part in helping to limit this terrible waste of life and, judging by the conversations I've

had, many operators are already doing their bit. But cyclists and Transport for London also need to share the burden of responsibility.

Let's not forget that LGV drivers have lengthy training and a difficult driving test. How many cyclists have received training? Cycle training should be mandatory, because until cyclists learn how to interact safely with vehicles, no amount of driver training or safety equipment is going to stop the deaths.

Equally, until the infrastructure available is improved, it's irresponsible for London mayor Boris Johnson to promote cycling. And before anyone even dares to suggest banning trucks from London during rush hour, let's have the ridiculously outdated London Lorry Control Scheme lifted. Will Shiers Editor
