Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE GREATER London Council pending appeal to the House Lords (CM, November 14) ov, the legality of its cheap faro scheme compelled the House 4 Commons transport committ( to hear industry evidence in pi vate last Wednesday.

The Freight Transport Assi ciation and Road Haulage Assi elation, were both scheduled I give evidence to the committ€ in the course of its resumed ii quiry into transportation in Lot don.

But, as the fares issue is su judice, the committee felt it wis. to confine the oral evidence t private sessions from whic press, public, and other wi nesses were excluded in cas the issue of fares or rates migl. be discussed in public, thu prejudicing the House of Lord appeal.

This development forced th FTA to withdraw a press ar nouncement after CM closed fc press last week, and althoug that statement was published i CM it merely repeated extract from the FTA's written evidenc to the inquiry, and did not toucl upon the question of publi transport.

The committee plans to hot( further hearings on this subjec until mid-January, and thi Labour GLC has been asked tl appear on December 16, in viev of the change of transport poll cies since the May elections. Th( committee's report is expecte( to appear next spring.
