SCOTTISH BUS GROUP inspec tor Thomas Muir told his bosse that he wanted time off to al tend a mass for a friend who ha, died, but instead of going t church the inspector ended u in a bingo hall.
His number came up when th chief inspector for Wester SMT's inspectors in the West Scotland visited a bingo hall i Johnstone, Renfrewshire.
John Gough told an industri; tribunal that he had become sui picious when he found out tl-N the alleged mass was suppose to start at 8 pm. He told the tribt nal he had made inquiries an that the latest time he could fin for a Mass of this kind was seve in the evening.
Just after eight o'clock 11.1 Muir, in full uniform, went in1 the bingo hall. About two how later after all the bingo playe! had trooped out the chief inspe tor saw Mr Muir locking up tF hall.
Mr Gough told the tribuna "When I asked Mr Muir what was doing doing he told me that F had only entered the bingo N about 20 minutes previously.
"I told him I had seen hi going in at about eight o'cloi and he replied that since seemed to know all about it would be better to tell me ti truth."
Two disciplinary hearinc. were held during the next fe days and it emerged that 11 Muir had made up the story of friend dying in order to get tin off to help out at the bingo hi — work for which he was pai He was sacked for deceit.
Mr Muir, who had received final warning in 1978 for allos ing his wife and a friend to go a bus tour without payment, claiming that he was unfail dismissed.
