Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• I read with dismay the suggestion in a recent Commercial Motor News Extra (CM 7-13 May) that the level of frontline enforcement by traffic examiners will be reduced during the wrangle over who manages whom.

Traffic examiners, specialists in their field, undertake responsible investigative work without fear or favour of anyone — including their managers. I believe them to be a most important part of enforcement and few operators do not miss a heartbeat when visited for a chat.

I fail to understand claims that "specialist" managers are needed to manage the traffic examiners, who need only support and encouragement to do their part in the enforcement in the road haulage industry.

I hope the vehicle inspectorate will reply to criticism by deploying managers of the highest calibre to deal with the needs of traffic examiners — and move forward to monitoring and control within the haulage industry. AN Stuart Bingley, West Yorks.
