• The BBC has ordered five Colour Mobile Control Rooms. The first will be tried out at Wimbledon and then sent to cover the Olympic Games.
Quantel of Reading was the main contractor but the side extending aluminium body was built by AA Smith of Colchester on a Dennis Eagle eight-wheel chassis developed from its municipal range.
Although plated at 25 tonnes it runs at a constant weight of about 23 tonnes.
To give a flat walk-through over its 12m length, the original Dennis Eagle tilt crew cab is fixed on the chassis and blended into the bodywork. An internal engine cowl replaces the tilt facility giving access to the 8.3litre 205kW (275hp) Cummins C Series 6CTAA engine and ZF Ecomat automatic gearbox integral hydrostatic retarder installed below.
The standard front steel and rear Hendrickson Norde rubber suspension is said to offer adequate suspension. To keep the equipment cool each area has its own air conditioning.
Sections of the body extend outwards to increase the working width by 0.76m.
