• MAN is preparing a replacement for its G90 middleweight range of trucks, which will use a version of Steyr's lightweight steel cab.
The new range, in the popular 6-10-tonne GVW weight sector, is scheduled for launch in late 1993 or early 1994.
MAN currently uses Volkswagen's ageing narrow LT cab on the G90, but this arrangement comes to an end in 1993. Steyr is now a subsidiary of MAN so its modern and compact cab (as used by ERF for its ES models) would be an obvious replacement. MAN is investing heavily in manufacturing facilities in Steyr's Austrian factory, including £45m on a cab production line.
It has already transferred production of the M90 12-17-tonners to Steyr's factory so the new G90 will almost certainly be built there too. In the medium term, MAN plans an annual output of 10,000 trucks from the Austrian site.
It is believed that the revised MAN model, which will be coming to the UK, is a substantially new product with changes extending well beyond using the different cab.
However, the engine choice is likely to be based on the existing range of power plants. MAN has already developed low-emission Euro-1 versions of the 4.58litre four and the 6.87-litre six that power the G90.
In this specification the D 0824 GF 03 four puts out 75kW (101hp), and the D 0826 GF 04 six produces 107kW (143hp). Three more powerful ratings of the larger engine developing 140-198kW are also available in Euro-1 form.
