Delegates meeting at the IRHA's conference agreed that the lack of control and monitoring mechanisms would make it impossible to have a liberalised haulage industry similar to that in the UK.
With yet another Irish Transport Minister promising immediate adoption of the Transport Consultative Commission's report on road freight haulage, it was inevitable that the licensing issue should come up for discussion.
Almost two years ago the report suggested complete liberalisation of entry to the haulage industry, the only restriction being placed on such quality controls as gaining a Certificate of Professional Competence.
The IRHA has consistently argued that this would lead to instability in the industry. "We should not make the mistake of modelling ourselves along British lines," said IRHA president Jim Walsh.
