West of Scotland:

BOC monopoly at Glasgow

by David Lowe • British Oxygen Co Ltd. which is not without some experience of monopolistic situations, put that experience to good use at the West of Scotland LDoY eliminator at Glasgow on Sunday. With 14 entries the company gained eight placings, the overall winner's award, the own-account award and the team prize.

In Class B, BOC took the first four places, C. Keenan winning with a loss of 92 points—which also gave him the centre championship and the own-account prize.

Shell-Mex and BP (Scotland) Ltd had no difficulty in gaining the three places in Class H for there were only three entries.

A strong contingent from the Army entered in Class B killed their chances by arriving late and surprisingly admitted that they got lost en route to the start.

Ruislip:

All the way from Southampton

by Tony Wilding • As in 1970 R. Pullinger came all the way from Southampton to take the Class A award at Ruislip LDoY eliminating round on Sunday. But this time he went one better by picking up the overall winner's cup as well as that for the best haulage vehicle driver.

Why does Mr Pullinger come so far? Because Ruislip is the nearest LDoY round held on a Sunday and the two tippers of Sunny Bank Sand have work to do on Saturdays. Coming so far, Mr Pullinger made sure he was well prepared for the contest. Not only did he drive well but he also collected only 20 penalties on the Highway Code test in his extremely low total of 58.

This year the Highway Code questions are causing a lot of difficulties and many drivers at Ruislip were critical of this section. I am, too, as many of the questions are ambiguous, call for knowledge not to be expected of a truck driver, or call for the driver to remember exactly particular sentences in the Code.

Liverpool:

A nice change

by Anthony O'Toole • A change of company and a change of class proved to be a rewarding move on the part of W. Rankin, Shell-Mex and BP Ltd, at the Liverpool round of the LDoY on Sunday. He was recorded both winner of Class B with a penalty loss of 92 points, and overall driver of the day.

Mr Rankin, a first-timer to the contest, had stepped in at the last minute to take, the place of a colleague who was unable to compete. Originally, Mr Rankin had entered the contest as a Class D driver for 81 Transport, Birkenhead.

Although the Highway Code once again took a heavy toll, with many drivers incurring more than 200 penalty points, only 20 points were forfeited by this year's champion—the remaining 72 being incurred when he lost 20 points on the road route and 36 points and 16 points on the first and third manoeuvring tests respectively.

With an entry of 156 drivers and 39 teams, the contest, which was once again held at Dunlop. Speke, was the largest staged at Liverpool to date.
