ASWINDON company director said at Devizes on Friday that a letterhead of his firm, showing a reproduction of a van, was a mistake. He also said that his firm's description as " carriers " in a GPO telephone directory was an error.
The director, Mr. Stanford J. Parker, of Stratton St. Margaret, was applying on behalf of South West Taxi Vans Ltd., for an A licence to convey goods within 100 miles.
There were nine objectors—British Railways Board, South West Parcels Service, L. Pike Ltd., C. H. Telling, F. L. Gray, W. L. Phillips and Son, C. Goodenough and Sons, R. MeLindsay and Hills Haulage (Swindon) Ltd.
Refusing the application, Mr. J. R. C. Samuel-Gibbon, the Western Licensing Authority, said the evidence Was not nearly sufficient in itself to justify an A licence of the type applied for. But a limited Li licence might be granted, although he could not prejudge such an pplication,
Mr. Parker. said his arm owned a mini I I-seater vehicle used mostly for passenger carrying, and a seven-seater mini-bus
used for the carriage of goods. Because it was difficult to accommodate goods in the mini-bus the firm wanted to replace it with a small van, He said the firm was trying to give an express 74-hour service.
Replying to Mr. T. D. Corpe, representing most of the objectors, Mr. Parker said he did not see a proof of the letterhead on the firm's notepaper of a van before committing himself to it. He did not agree that it was "misleading ".
Regarding the telephone directory description, he said the firm never advertised itself as a carrier. " Its passenger work was "far in excess" of goods carriage and it had no intention of giving it up.
Mr. Parker agreed that a previous application for a van was refused in August, 1963.
The current application was supported by representatives from Torrington Manufacturing Co. Ltd and Swindon Electroplate Co. Ltd.
Mr. Corpe said that if the application had been for a B licence, there would have been much more room for manceuvre between the applicant and the objectors ".
