Mr. S. Gordon Sloan has been appointed to the board of Simms Motor and Electronics Corporation Ltd. London Transport has appointed Mr. K. G. Shave chief mechanical engineer (road services) with effect from July 5, on the retirement of Mr. A. A. , M. Durrant. Deputy chief mechanical engineer will he Mr. J. W. Wicks. Mr. Shave, who is 56, began his transport career in 1925 as an engineering apprentice with London General Omnibus Co. in 1929 he was appointed garage engineer with East Surrey Traction Co. and later became assistant to the chief engineer. In 1930 Mr. Shave was appointed rolling stock superintendent of London General country services and after various other appointments became rolling stock engineer (road services) in 1956 and deputy chief mechanical engineer (road services) in 1964. Mre,Wicks, who iS also 56, joined the experimental department of London General Omnibus Co. in 1930 as a technical assistant. In 1940 he was appointed a technical officer of LPTB and became London Transport's works manager (road services) in 1958.

Mr. V. F. Clements has been appointed information officer, BRS Federation Ltd., with effect from May 24, in succession to Mr. P. W. Flower, who is now with the Eastern Electricity Board. FIRS has also appointed Mr. K. J. Gilmour as purchasing officer designate. to succeed Mr. A. IL Passey, who is to retire. Sir Patrick Hennessy, chairman of Ford Motor Co. Lid.. was elected president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders at its council meeting last week. Mr. W. Swallow, chairman and managing director of Vauxhall Motors Ltd., who was president for the previous year, is now deputy-president. Mr. J. J. Parkes, chairman and managing director of Alvis Ltd., continues in office for a third term as a vice-president, and Mr. I. D. Richards, chairman of British Solex Group, was re-elected as vicepresident.

Dr. R. S. Millard has been appointed deputy director of the Road Research Laboratory; the post is a new one. Dr. Millard was previously head of the tropical section of the laboratory.

The Council of the National Tyre Distributors' Association has elected Mr. Jack Rothwell and Mr. Joe Goodwin as vice-president and deputy vice-president respectively.

Mr. P. W. Smith is to he appointed Northern area sales manager for Transport Vehicles (Daimler) Ltd., with effect from June 30, Mr. Smith joined the company on March 1 this year and succeeds Mr. S. J. Lenton, who is to retire after more than 42 years with the company. He joined Daimler in 1923, after 10 years as an engineer with the Royal Navy.

Mr. H. J. Cassidy was elected chairman of the Scottish Centre of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers at the recent a.g.M., with Mr. .1. R. Forsyth as vice-chairman.

Mr. Eric Smaller, transport manager for the past three years of the canning firm of J. and J. Beaulah Ltd., Boston. Lines, is moving to Grantham to become area representative for Lincolnshire of the finance firm of Bowmakers Ltd.

Mr. C. R. Raker is sales director of Brake Linings Ltd.. Buxton. His title was given incorrectly on page 168 in the May 7 issue,

Obituary

WE regret to record the deaths of Mr. A. W. Grotefeld, Mr. A. Jones and Mrs, L. Safford.

Mr. Grotefeld. 61, was technical manager of Triplex Safety Glass Co. Ltd. He played a leading part in the development of both toughened and laminated safety glass.

Mr. Jones, who was South Wales regional manager for Leyland Motors Ltd., was 46. He joined Leyland in 1950 and worked on the company's sales teams in LineOln and Bristol. Later he was area manager in London and regional manager in Plymouth.

Mrs. Safford was for many years a partner in the Little Gransden (Hunts) coach firm of L. Safford and Son. She was 80.
