A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a French truck driver who failed to pay a fine following a fatal acci

dent in which a coach driver was killed. Jean Claude Boulanger was driving on the wrong side of the road when his truck ploughed into Alan Harrison's coach near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Boulanger was fined £500 with six penalty points, but he failed to pay up and Pontefract magistrates have issued a warrant for his arrest.

However. French police have no power to take any action—and because of a legal loophole the penalty points will not be added to the fugitive trucker's licence.

Harrison's wife June says: "I am angry rather than upset. The fine was bad enough, but to think he has walked out and that is it."

Courts can notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of convictions, enabling these to be taken into account if the driver breaks UK law again.

However, a DVLA spokesman confirms: "We do not have the legal powers to physically endorse such licences with details of motoring convictions.

"Plans to introduce mutual recognition of drvinp, dis qualifications throughout the ELJ were agreed in The convention will Pe ratified in Britain as soon as sible; it is hoped that other member states will qi follow suit," • At least eight people were killed and twenty s were injured after an Italian truck collided with a coach this week.

The crash happened about 02:00hrs on the A31 Metz in France. The cause of the crash is not knowi police believe the truck driver, travelling south Luxembourg, may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

He crashed through the central reservation an the coach head on. The coach was carrying 61 D tourists back to the Netherlands following a skiing day in the French Alps.
