(VI) has risen by 26% over the past eight years. According to Transport Minister David Jamieson the VI now employs 289 vehicle examiners to crack down on dangerous vehicles, compared with 229 in 1994-95.
The number of traffic examiners who check driver and Operator's Licences and tacho charts rose from 163 to 185 in the same period.
Mary Williams, chief executive of the road safety campaign group Brake, applauds the increase but warns: "More investment is still needed to provide the VI with more staff
