MANY DRIVERS are being caught out by articulated tractive units with sleeper cabs being matched with maximum length trailers. The resulting outfit usually exceeds the permitted maximum length for an articulated vehicle of 15 metres (49ft 2.556in).

The matter has been discussed at the Association of Chief Police Officers' traffic committee and a spokesman for the committee told CM this week that it was obvious that the incidence of overlength artics was on the increase. Not only are drivers of such vehicles at risk of prosecution from action by the police, but they could be prosecuted as the result of a roadside check by DoE enforcement staff,
