• Now that vehicles under 30cwt no longer require a carrier's licence, it was argued in Preston on Tuesday, the B licence on which a light vehicle was formerly authorized could not be varied. Mr. F. Sharpies, of Nelson, was applying to the North Western deputy LA, Mr. A. H. Jolliffe, to add one 3-ton vehicle to be acquired.

For two objectors, Mr. J. A. Backhouse pointed out that the applicant had operated a 15cwt van under his old B licence, but the licence was now of no significance. Section 93(1) of the Transport Act 1968 said that Section 164 of the 1960 Act shall cease to apply to vehicles under 30cwt -and any carrier's licence so far as it authorizes the use of such a vehicle shall cease to have effect."

Mr. Jolliffe said he would hear the evidence and give his decision in writing if no further objections were received.
