ONE -of the HIM ambitious applications that has Come before me for many years," was how the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority described an application by Mr. Frank Mackay, Thorneyhill. Fettercaim, for perrMssiort to carry attested cattle. throughout Scotland and England for farmers within hi S area. The application• wr; later modified to the collection, and delivery of .attested 'beasts witlun I a25-mile radius of Mr. Mackay's farm, and to carry them to and from various markets.
The applicant, who had a herd of 160 attested animals, said thathe had bought his' own vehicle to be used only for such beasts. In response to requests by owners of other attested herds, he had applied to carry their cattle, He was afraid to use hired vehicles Mr. A. Anderson, who had 250 attested animals, said that he thought it " madness to put such beasts into a trtick which only a short time previously had been carrying non-attested cattle.
Mr: James Barclay, from the Stonehaven depot of the Road Haulage Executise, said that the R.H.E. had at Auchinblae a specially constructed vehicle for the carriage of attested cattle. It was not used much by farmers, and he thought that this was proof that such a service was not in demand.
Under cross'examination, Mr. Barclay said that this vehicle was used for carrying every sort of animal, but it was built of non-absorbent material and was easily cleaned. It would be confined to attested cattle if demand increased.
The Authority granted a licence to collect and deliver attested cattle within a 154nile radius of Fettercaim and to operate to and front markets at Aberdeen, Perth, Paisley, Lanark and Ayr.
